Alice from the Disney animation. I like her expression in this frame.

My dear daughter,

Alice is a beautiful name. It has a nice sound. Like a soft, sweet sound. Supposedly, it means “of the nobility”. From the German Adalheidis, meaning nobility, and the French Adeliz which is a form of Adelaide. You truly are a jewel from the old world.

It’s the main character in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Those are awesome books, you’re gonna love them. We will read them to you as soon as you are able to understand them, maybe earlier. Carroll (his actual name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) was also a mathematician so there are logic conundrums, and it’s a nonsense and fantastical narrative. They are fantasy tales.

There is a very nice song about the books by the band Jefferson Airplane, called White Rabbit. We have played it for you already. We started playing it for you when you were still in your mother’s belly.

There is a scientific experiment which consists of very large equipment in subterranean tunnels near the French-Swiss border, close to Geneva, which is the Large Hadrons Collider, or LHC. It is run by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and it is the largest particles accelerator running in the world today. It is used to figure out how Nature looks like in the sub-atomic scale, which has lots of implications in larger scales and to our understanding of the Universe.

One of the detectors at the LHC is called ALICE – A Large Ions Collider Experiment.

In quantum mechanics the scientists like to use the names Alice and Bob in examples to illustrate particle interactions, or to represent two persons taking measures of quantum physics experiments.

It’s a nice name any way you look at it and it’s spelled the same way in most countries.

We hope you like it.

Love,

Dad
