My dear daughter,

Here is a list of the 25 best movies of all times I can think of right now:

  1. Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back;
  2. 2001 – A Space Odyssey;
  3. Citizen Kane;
  4. The Shining;
  5. A Clockwork Orange;
  6. Spartacus;
  7. Paths of Glory;
  8. Dr. Strangelove;
  9. Star Wars – A New Hope;
  10. Seven Samurai;
  11. The Hidden Fortress;
  12. Ran;
  13. Yojimbo;
  14. Sanjuro;
  15. Rashomon;
  16. The Godfather;
  17. The Godfather part 2;
  18. Ben-Hur;
  19. Apocalypse Now;
  20. Superman The Movie;
  21. Taxi Driver;
  22. Pulp Fiction;
  23. Reservoir Dogs;
  24. Inglorious Basterds;
  25. The Good Fellas.

There’s not much criteria here. Maybe… those are good movies to understand humankind. Well, most of them have a great deal of appeal to men, possibly around my age and mostly white men. They don’t go as far as being chauvinist, though. Looking back at the list, there’s a lot of violence in those movies and I watched most of them as a teenager for the first time. I’d probably come up with a different list every time I wrote a new one.

Some directors have a few entries – my favorite directors, which are Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas (just the old stuff) and Quentin Tarantino. Most of them are from the counterculture Hollywood generation. Some of these works are inspired by older movies which are also masterpieces.

Love,

Dad
