My dear daughter,

We are taking you to be baptized on Sunday, in a christian catholic church.

It goes against my best judgement. It is a violence of sorts, to submit a baby to a religious ritual.

Some countries, like Iceland, forbid parents from exposing children to religion until the age of 21. It is a good policy. One can observe the damage caused by some forms of religion in the mind of an adult. To a child, it can be considered cowardice.

Some forms of religious speech corrode reason. They push limited worldview on you, one that can limit your potential, even lead you to harmful life choices.

Yet, your mother believes in a higher power or some form of ultimate and mystic purpose to life. She is more affected by the teachings she received when she was younger. She feels it’s more of a family tradition, that you should receive the same rites she received. A means to appease her family, who are ultra-religious.

I had to make a compromise. You will not be submitted to christianism or any other form of religion. When you are old enough and, most important, wise enough, you can choose for yourself. But you will have to go through baptism. The family will be happy, we are going to have a little party afterwards. There is an effect of strengthening bonds. Your uncle feels somewhat honored that your mother has chosen him as godfather.

You will remember nothing of it, but I will be at your side the whole time.

Love,

Dad
