My dear daughter,
Know this: people rarely become homeless by choice or simply because they don’t want to work.
To live in the streets means risking one’s life every moment. In this country rich kids burn homeless people for sport. That’s how savage this country is.
Neoliberalism causes a lot of misery, lots of people go poor, jobs disappear and the rich get richer. Families are forced to live in the streets. The State is unable to perform its duty to support these families until they get back on their feet.
That kind of despairing situation brings some people to vices, alcohol, drugs or simply erodes their mental and physical health. Soon they become unable to work even if they have an opportunity.
Poverty causes all kinds of disasters. Impoverished families might send their sick, their elders and even their children away. The mentally disturbed might voluntarily seek the streets.
For a child who has fled a ruined home, the streets have their attractions, like a degree of freedom, companionship, readily available drugs, or it’s simply different from a home where they got beat up every day. It’s up to the State to stop the vicious cycle which keeps children in the streets.
It’s ironic that the big abrahamic religions mandate giving alms and helping the poor. Only most religious people do the opposite; they hate the poor.
Also, giving alms might help, but the solution to the problem is political – same as its cause. The State has the means and the duty to eradicate homelessness.
The important thing is to never let go of your compassion and empathy. Homeless people are not to be looked down with despise or hate. To do that would be despicable and inhuman.
Love,
Dad
