Sometimes it pays to play the fool.
Stupid people believe they are above anyone else. If you can let go of your own ego and pride and just let the stupid believe you are below him, he will reveal more than he should. He might even start considering you an equal. It’s always good advice to keep your enemies close.
As with everything else, some people are more intelligent than others; compassion and empathy also vary between individuals. Some people are less cultured or educated. Some are tons of books behind in their reading to understand a simple argument. According to folk wisdom, people can’t give more than what they have.
That’s why you have to choose your battles and save your arguments, lest they fall on deaf ears.
Or as I like to put it, you have to observe the Prime Directive, which forbids Starfleet officers from interfering with the development of pre-warp cultures.
Of course some people are plain evil or plain stupid. I place in those categories those who have studied enough or grew up in an environment where they could have attained a certain degree of understanding about a subject, or should have because of their profession or duties, or simply from a desire to become better citizens, better persons in a community.
