My dear daughter,

I have been reading one of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s diaries. This one was only found during the 90’s by chance, among the assets in the estate of a friend of his family.

It’s funny because he was one of the most intelligent individuals to walk on this planet, responsible for a complete review of philosophy of language, logics and epistemology during his time, patron of the Vienna Circle, Cambridge lecturer and disciple to Bertrand Russell. To this day he is a major influencer among all kinds of scholars, even among the ones who don’t understand a single thing about Wittgenstein. Yet the longest entries on his diary were about the ups and downs of his relationship with his sweetheart Marguerite Respinger.

It’s very interesting to note he displayed some commonly disconcerting traits displayed by other geniuses. He doubted himself all the time, feared the loss of his intelligence, regretted being pedantic or arrogant from time to time, got extremely anxious about his lectures and classes, loved music and abhorred shallow opinions. He feared his work would be misunderstood or taken completely out of context by some superficial reader or charlatan thinker.

However, what really bothered him, to the point he would forget about everything else, was his girlfriend’s mood and the prospect of the end of their betrothal.

Most people have gone  through this during the teen years and early adult life. It really sucks. I’m glad I’m over that stage. I don’t know how these things are from a girl’s point of view, but I hope you can also overcome such hardships.

Love,

Dad
