My dear daughter,
The world is a complex place and no simple ideas, theories or thoughts can explain it.
People are biased to take on simple explanations that confirm their worldview. They are also likely to take conclusions based on insufficient data and see correlation where there is none.
During most of our species’ time on Earth, it was important for survival to be able to make fast life and death decisions on whatever data was available. Our brains also quickly adapted to attribute agency to inanimate objects, to try to explain natural phenomena. We were only able to attribute causation to what we could readily see or experience.
That doesn’t matter anymore. We are not struggling to survive in the African prairies any longer. Yet, most people still use their brains like it was 20,000 BCE.
That kind of simple reasoning – or absence of reasoning – might even make one’s life seem less complicated for a time, but inevitably people have to face the music. Ignorance is the source of all suffering, whether the sufferer acknowledges the chain of causation or not. Ignorance is also especially harmful to Democracy, the environment and the survival of civilization as a whole.
Love,
Dad
