My dear daughter,

Violence isn’t a solution to any kind of problem. Scientific evidence shows violence begets violence.

Still, every time I dive on the roads of this country, I wish I could beat to a pulp the faces of every driver who uses the road shoulder to travel and overtake other cars; truckers who perform illegal passing, speedsters, people who use roads as a racing track, people who drive stuck to the back of another car, people who fancy themselves the only ones entitled to be in a hurry… as if such attitudes weren’t the stuff of horrible accidents, of the destruction of families – as if it was normal for thousands of people to perish on the roads weekly.

I’d beat to a pulp every motherfucker who thinks nothing bad will happen if they drink and drive, because they fancy themselves so much more skilled than everybody else, because they think accidents only happen with others, because they think god’s will be done and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

It wouldn’t do much good if I didn’t beat to a pulp every president, governor, mayor and administrative authority who made sure the roads stay free of police enforcement, by action or inaction. Every politician who stole or deviated money which could be used to improve road safety, who conspired with companies to perform poor road maintenance so they can be hired again every year, who defrauded contracts to overpay for poor quality material.

Every goddamn politician who thought it was a good idea to give everyone a license to operate a missile weighing 1-2 tons and never again inspect drivers to see if they remain apt to keep their licenses. Every authority who thought cities would be better crowded with cars and drivers instead of trains and subways. Every authority who thought it was a good idea to raise speed limits.

I’m a good driver, but I hate driving for these reasons. I know all too well it’s a death lottery every time a person gets behind the wheel.

It’s not normal for anyone to die in car accidents. Not any person. Can’t wait for driverless cars and trains to replace every single driver in the world.

Love,

Dad
