My dear daughter,

Self-driving, AI-powered cars couldn’t arrive soon enough.

The world insists every person in crowded cities should move from one place to another inside their own 2-ton metallic missile. Intelligent robot drivers seem like a good tradeoff to bloodthirsty, ignorant and reckless human drivers.

There are plenty other ways technology could be used at present time to prevent traffic accidents and reduce fatalities. It’s easy to have an entire road surveilled now, with high-res cameras on every kilometer. Machine learning could be employed to identify cars disobeying speed limits, changing lanes too often and too quickly, trucks in the wrong lane, drivers terrorizing others, etc.

But what are the chances of that happening in a country where people started complaining about a  traffic fine industry just because traffic laws began to be actively enforced; where a speed reduction in freeways – which actually saved thousands of lives and improved traffic – was rejected by the population just because they prefer to go 10km/h faster?

To this day people shun at the prohibition of drinking and driving.

Love,

Dad
