There has been another environmental disaster concerning a mining company. Hundreds of people died under a landslide of toxic mud.
In 2015 there was a similar disaster, involving the same company. It was the worst environmental disaster in the country’s History. Together with the irreplaceable loss of human lives, several marine species were extinguished.
It happened again because nothing changed since 2015. There was a center-left government back then, it was thrown out by a far-right government and now a far-right one was elected and regulations in the mining business can be considered non-existent. The lobby is still going strong, law enforcement is a joke, nothing gets properly audited or supervised while some people keep on increasing their bank accounts.
They mine iron and I believe most of it goes to China. Only poor people lost their lives, homes and families, so nobody really cares much after the initial commotion, which is really sad.
People affected by the 2015 disaster are still waiting for compensation or a new house. Entire villages were swept away. What’s worse, families who were dislodged, who effectively became refugees in their own country, suffer prejudice from their new neighbors, who refer to them as the mud people. Even children are shunned.
This country is really full of evil people.
