My dear daughter,

As you finish growing up and maturing, it’s important to keep your brain fit.

Studies have shown there is some benefit to memory in jogging. There are unconfirmed studies relating exercising with lower risk of early Alzheimer’s.

It appears there is a strong correlation between exercising and cognition in general.

Doing puzzles and pushing yourself to perform activities out of your comfort zone, or in a way you are not used to, helps with brain plasticity. It’s the ability to change neural pathways and region specializations to accommodate new realities. It keeps you going.

The brain works on sugar, because it’s a readily available source of energy, and it uses up to 20% of all the body’s energy. But too much sugar will provoke lethargy, not to mention diabetes and other related diseases. Exaggerating on fats and carbohydrates is also not good for the brain.

Studying new languages, reading or writing books, learning musical instruments, keeping your abilities sharp on different fields of knowledge – it’s all beneficial.

Let’s not forget about emotional balance and interpersonal intelligence. Interacting with other people, having a group of friends and family to rely on is also healthy for your mind.

Last, but not least, you should avoid alcohol (a little every now and then is ok, as long as you’re not driving) and stay away from tobacco and vaping at all costs.

Love,

Dad
