My dear daughter,

Some people are conservative and some people are progressive. When they use such terms they usually refer to economy, politics and social behavior.

Conservatives prefer things the way they are, or they want to go back to the way they were (usually, the way they think things were, which is something very different). Progressives often believe some things would be better if they changed.

As a race of nomads and survivalists, we have an evolutionary tendency to conservation. It’s normal to be afraid of the new, because it’s unknown.

The problem is, at our current stage of development, this aversion to change tends to irrationality. Especially when we have knowledge that the current state of affairs isn’t fair to everybody. In that sense, conservationism is more akin to selfishness.

Most of what progressives propose in several fields isn’t exactly new, untested or unheard of, it’s just different from what the most comfortable conservatives are used to. It doesn’t affect their lives at all.

We are not yet in a post-scarcity world, so selfishness has a place in a few, very specific situations, but keeping things the way they are, for the benefit of a select very few, is actually draining resources faster.

We have to be careful when analyzing conservative and progressive postures, as to not attribute them the same value in every situation. It is necessary to undress them of hidden intentions and agendas.

Love,

Dad
