My dear daughter,
In the last 10 years, the economy of the retail sector has completely shifted due to the action of the big tech companies.
All internet retail sales and directed marketing go through Amazon, Google, Facebook websites and Apple smartphones.
Those are all American companies. They hire a ridiculous amount of people, mostly young programmers. They work tirelessly to create means to gather every bit of information about the lives of pretty much everybody, to present entertaining and addicting content to enslave people’s attention, so they keep on spending time on their devices, getting exposed to direct advertisement, and hopefully buying things they don’t really need.
It’s as if half the world was addicted to heroin, and these companies were the only suppliers. Even better, they create their own demand.
Even worse, these companies are well aware that hate speech is a very efficient means of trapping one’s attention. Therefore, they boost hate posting, which usually means racist and fascist posting. That’s right, they endorse racism and fascism. And there’s no law in the USA to prevent that. In fact, they work to weaken anti-rascist legislation and Democracy protection legislation in other countries.
They have such power they drive other retailers and marketing services out of business. Higher education is at their disposal to provide more “soldiers” to their own needs. They drive cultural production, they have data centers around the world which consume more power and water than entire cities. They have a tremendous impact on their supplying industry, they have effectively shifted electronic components factories from the western world to Southeast Asia.
What dazzles me is that this is a self-serving industry, they are not producing goods, energy, food or knowledge which would benefit the rest of society. In fact, they’re rapidly depleting important natural resources on mobile phones which are designed to last 1 year or less, and they are not concerned about recycling. Not to mention non-renewable resources consumed by datacenters.
So you have this multitude, several times the population of most countries, working day and night to keep a profit growth which will benefit a handful of investors, most of them Americans and Saudis. And there is very little income redistribution, because they pay almost no taxes at all. It’s actually a non-regulated market. And to be frank, with a couple exceptions, most countries nowadays are inefficient at income distribution. They are unable to tap in the wealth generated by these companies to the benefit of the rest of the population. That really concerns me.
Love,
Dad
