My dear daughter,

We are witnessing the decline of liberal democracies in the last decade.

Sadly, History has acknowledged the predictions of USA’s founding fathers – there can be no democratic republic, at least not in a capitalist economy, without very well informed and educated citizens, concerned with upholding democratic and republican principles.

An uneducated citizen can’t exercise citizenship. For a democracy to function, every citizen has to closely watch the government and lawmakers, so they don’t get contaminated by the interests of an economic elite.

If capitalism is unregulated, companies will quickly concentrate money and power, by devouring other companies and initiatives.

Soon, they will seize political power without any need of revolution or any apparent change. It is possible to use money to influence governments and parliaments. They can be bought.

Next, the State is working for the benefit of this elite, while maintaining an appearance of government for the people.

It’s just too easy to keep an illusion of democracy. It’s also possible to use money to keep people busy, entertained, drugged, sedated, numb, overworked, desperate. It’s possible to buy or influence other sectors which were supposed to be independent, supposed to act as impartial watchers, like the press, Universities and the organized civil society.

None of these elements from the models conceived after the American and French revolutions appear to be working nowadays. Citizens are too removed from those who were supposed to be their direct representatives.

Love,

Dad
